The Real King Who Made The Speech
It’s official - the Oscars are over, and “The King’s Speech” is the top film in all the land. Colin Firth, the (incredibly handsome) man who played King George VI, is also this year’s best actor. So we figured in honor of the accolades, we’d show you the real king behind the movie - here are several images of King George VI and his family from our Miriam and...

A Presidential Menu With Manhattans, Cigars and...
Back on Feb. 12, 1907, The Republican Club of Kings County held a dinner at Brooklyn’s Trommer’s Hall to commemorate what would have been the 98th birthday of President Abe Lincoln. We have the menu in our menu collection, housed in our Rare Books Division. In addition to Manhattans, wines and cigars, guests were offered cream of celery soup, oysters, sweet bread croquettes,...

Two Months 'til Tax Time
We know this isn’t a fun thought for a Friday… but, the Library is determined that you shouldn’t suffer during tax time this year. Through April 18, the Science, Industry & Business Library has tax experts on-site to help New Yorker’s file their returns. Let us ease the burden of tax preparation; if you earn less than $48K and have a valid e-mail address, visit the library at 188 Madison...

Get Thee to the Library...
A bevy of nuns graced the Edna Barnes Salomon Room at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on 42nd Street during Monday’s Thom Browne Catwalk Fashion Show. We think this photo by Peter Stigter demonstrates the diversity of the Library’s appeal… A wholly holy sanctuary one day, celebrity haven the next! (The Adjustment Bureau movie premiere was the following night.) You should consider the Library...

Pitchers And Catchers, Baby
Love isn’t the only thing in the air today. So is baseball! Pitchers and catchers are reporting! So in honor of America’s pastime, we thought we’d bring out this very cool photo from last year’s Summer Reading celebration at Yankee Stadium. Baseball and the Library - what could be better? Also, below are two very old baseball cards from our A.G. Spalding collection. We...

Generosity Day!
On Valentine’s Day, don’t give chocolates, give an act of kindness!  At the NYPL, our job is to help you better yourself. We hope this also translates into you passing on the goodwill to your friends, family and community members. So, let’s help reboot Monday as Generosity Day (the brainchild of Sasha Dichter)!   Examples of great things to do on #generosityday: • Give money...

Spider Man at NYPL
batteryparkcity: Original art to the 7/20/92 Spider Man daily showing Peter Parker entering The New York Public Library for a reference inquiry.  Even superheroes need help. Our Battery Park City branch is on Tumblr, and judging by the Spiderman frame above, I think they’re off to a spectacular start.

Advice we love hearing: Ditch Starbucks and work... →
Many web workers and freelancers like to get out of the house once in a while and set up shop at Starbucks, Borders or the local coffee shop. I did this, too, until I realized that there’s a much better – and cheaper – option just down the road. My library. There’s a lot of people who don’t just start their businesses here, but run them here too. (via HN)

We Are So Gosh Darn Popular . . .
Well, social media fans, we have good news and bad news. The good news is our Social Media Week opening reception is very popular! The bad news is it’s officially full (fire code rules are very strict, you know). So if you haven’t RSVP’d for tonight’s party yet, unfortunately you’re a bit out of luck. Sorry! But we’ll have plenty of coverage of it here and - of...

Don't Blame Us - We Lost A Bet
Here’s the terrible truth: the newly-restored facade of our Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on 42nd Street is now flying a Pittsburgh Steelers “Terrible Towel.” No, Patience and Fortitude are not big fans of Big Ben. Back in January, Mayor Bloomberg made a bet with Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Revanstahl over the AFC Championship Game between the Steelers and the New York Jets. If NY...
