1. This image, from the NYPL Digital Collection , shows Judge John Raulston speaking to the jury during the trial of The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes. Also known as The Scopes Monkey Trial, the trial began on this day in 1925 after the high school science teacher, Scopes, was accused of violating Tennessee’s Butler Act which made it illegal to to teach human evolution in state-funded schools.
