1. bigevidence:

Lines around the block to get into late opening NYPL. People need their books.

Our libraries officially opened for business at noon today following the MTA shutdown and the hurricane - and it seemed people just couldn’t wait! We’re glad to hear it! Just FYI, except for some minor flooding at some of our locations, NYPL escaped Irene basically unscathed. Thanks for all your concern! Also, you should know that any items with due dates set for Saturday and Sunday (when we were closed) have been extended to Tuesday, Aug. 30. So no fines for those days.

  2. Delayed Opening For NYPL On Monday, Aug. 29

Following the bad weather and the MTA shut down, most NYPL branches will open at noon on Monday, Aug. 29. There COULD be isolated closings or even later openings, though, so be sure to check our website or call ahead to your local branch, just to be safe.

  3. Brace yourself and be careful, New York. Irene has arrived (and, boy, is she an unwelcome guest). This undated cigarette card from our George Arents Collection depicts a hurricane warning flag (it’s part of a flags of all nations series, which is sort of weird, because there is no nation of hurricane, that we know of). Anyway, please heed that warning! Stay inside, download an eBook (NYPL branches are closed today, but our website is open for business) and stay safe!

  4. Since it’s supposed to rain cats and dogs in New York this weekend thanks to Hurricane Irene, we thought we’d use this week’s Caturday to share this image of a man and his cat dealing with bad weather. The caricature was engraved sometime between 1818 and 1830, and is located in our Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs. While this is fun, New Yorkers should take the warnings about this hurricane seriously! Be careful, people! First read this NYPL blog post about hurricane preparedness, then check out some NYPL eBooks from the safety of your home (NYPL is closed today and tomorrow, remember). Then get lost in a book until you turn on the news and hear the storm is over!
