1. This week for Mustache Monday we bring you Siro Delmonico, the nephew of the founders of the eponymous restaurant group, who managed business downtown. You can read more about him in his obit, published in the Times on December 20, 1881. Apparently he was a tremendous cigar smoker, had an excellent memory for names and faces, and did well by the family name in the business arena.
You can learn more about Delmonico’s by visiting Lunch Hour NYC at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, on view until Feb. 2013.

  2. It’s no secret that The New York Public Library has a hearty appreciation for food. So with chef Marcus Samuelsson here on Monday, restaurateur Danny Meyer and a delicious panel of writers here on Tuesday, and the Lunch Hour NYC exhibition currently on display, we did what anyone would do: have a Macaroni and Cheese Cook-Off! Head on over to the Huffington Post to find out what happened when NYPL staffers tried out mac and cheese recipes from Marcus Samuelsson, Blue Smoke, and even Horn & Hardart’s Automat recipe, available at Lunch Hour NYC. (The photo above is the winning dish!)

  3. Looking for something to do today (something easily accessible by subway)? Why not check out the Library’s totally free Lunch Hour NYC exhibition at our landmark 42nd Street building? It tells the story of the midday meal, from power lunches to street carts to Sardi’s cartoons. Check out other images from the exhibition, and this (very enthusiastic and positive) NY Times review. We’re open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today - come on down.

  4. We love sharing such delicious, fantastic news!

    lunchhournyc:

Good news. We couldn’t say goodbye to the food trucks just yet, and they will be sticking around the Library through November! So if you couldn’t enough of literature and lunches this summer, come by 40th and 5th Ave. for more irresistible dishes and drinks this fall. A portion of the sales will continue to go to Bryant Park and The New York Public Library. Thank you for the support, and keep on eating! Remember, if you have time after your meal, the Lunch Hour NYC exhibition will be open until February 17, 2013.

(The above photos are from a team trip to Eddie’s Pizza. Did you know that the margherita pizza is named after Queen Margherita of Italy who was served a pizza in the colors of the Italian flag?)

  5. A cool now-and-then pic of a building on W. 72nd Street that used to be an Automat, courtesy of Landmarks West!. A few of their summer interns came to visit Lunch Hour NYC, where we have a restored Automat machine on display, and were inspired to write a very kind blog post. Glad you loved the exhibition!

  6. Come down to the library this afternoon for a slushie! They look pretty darn good. Then pop in to check out Lunch Hour NYC. Your boss won’t even know you’re gone.

    lunchhournyc:

Our trucks will be leaving us after Labor Day, so we had to pop over to the Library today for this new treat! Kelvin Slush is at the Library on the corner of 40th and 5th Ave. today until 7 p.m. and next Wednesday from 4-7 p.m.

If these look as meltwatering to you as they did to us, check out all the ways you can mix their flavors. For reference, the front two are green and black tea slush mixed with raspberry (left) and strawberry fruit purée. The red straw is sitting in their Arnold Palmer special (tea and citrus slush, mixed with pineapple or white peach), and the blue straw is another green and black tea, but with passion fruit. (Of course, I was the only one who got something different.)
