It’s our second home,” says Frances, who along with her sister comes to the branch at least three or four times a week to find new reading material and see old friends. “Without it we would be lost.” The duo enjoys discovering contemporary novels and books on art, cooking, crafts, and exercise thanks to the help of Library Manager Martha Gonzalez-Buitrago and other staff members with whom they’ve become friendly. “The library gives us a sense of community,” says Terry. “It keeps your mind engaged. It’s part of our almost everyday living.” Free resources for seniors and other essential Library services could be dramatically cut back due to a proposed $43 million reduction in funding for The New York Public Library. It features an outdoor garden, the NYPL’s first green roof, nearly 40 public access computers, wi-fi and over 20,000 collection items. The community has long outgrown the previous building and has been eagerly awaiting their new space, so there is plenty of excitement around this opening. So if you’re free, come on out for the ceremony and a day of programming, including crafts, face-painting, a lecture by a historian, a talk with author Steven Torres and more. Plus, refreshments will be served throughout the day, including pizza and cupcakes donated by local businesses Bari Pizzeria and Restaurant and Leila’s Hand-Dipped Chocolate. So come celebrate!
