1. Tyra Banks is coming to the Library to talk to teens! This Sunday, September 25th, we are hoping that hundreds of teens will be attending the first TeenLIVE event of this season: Tyra is stopping at the Library on her Modelland book tour to talk to the teens! This is for the 13 to 18 year-old crowd, but truth is, we’d admit a smart 12 year-old or an enthusiast 19 year-old. (Accompanying parents are always welcome.) Every attending teen will receive an autographed copy of Tyra’s new book Modelland! Pass the word to the teens that you know that model/television host/Harvard Business School attendee has added novelist to her roles. The program starts at 2 pm and is in the Celeste Bartos Forum (right inside the 42nd Street entrance to the Library). All attending teens should pre-register; the event is free, but there will be a fabulous prize given to a few lucky pre-registered attendees. See you on Sunday!

  2. Tyra Banks Visits NYPL And Talks Libraries

Supermodel and library lover Tyra Banks stopped by our landmark 42nd Street building this morning, talking with us about how “libraries are insanely important.”  Banks, who follows us on Twitter and wrote parts of her upcoming young adult novel Modelland in our Rose Main Reading Room, said, “The library is such a great equalizer. It doesn’t take money. You can have access to anything and everything in the world and get that knowledge and that entertainment for free. Especially in our economy right now, with things being expensive and people being laid off and  families having issues, to be able to come to the Library … that’s kind of amazing.” She added that the Rose Main Reading Room (where she’s pictured in this photo by NYPL’s Jonathan Blanc) “is just insanely gorgeous,” and said, “I would just look up and be inspired. I think this branch actually made me dream bigger and my imagination flowed. There were no boundaries because the room was so inspirational.” Tyra - who is currently reading Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins - also uses our Mid-Manhattan Library sometimes, and said when she walked into the Inglewood Public Library in California as a kid, “I almost felt like it was giving me a hug.” Very sweet! Thanks Tyra! Her book comes out in September - get it in a library near you.

  3. Are you a teenager interested in fashion?  Clothes designer LaQuan Smith is going to be at the Mulberry Street Library tomorrow (Tuesday, February 8) at 5:30 pm, and we promise that he’ll be giving behind-the-scenes details about his personal story, how a designer get celebrities to wear his or her clothes, and his perspective on popular ideas of beauty. This is a designer that has created custom pieces for Tyra Banks (that’s LaQuan and Tyra in the photo above!), Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyonce, Dakota Fanning, and others. And he’ll be bringing a couple of these pieces for us to ooh and ah over! Ideeli.com’s Adriana Nova will be interviewing him, and refreshments will be served afterward. C’mon, aspiring teen designers, let’s see you at the library tomorrow!
This program is part of TeenLIVE. It is sponsored by the Katerina and Andreas C. Dracopoulos Family Endowment for Young Audiences.
