1. Here is a feel-good Caturday for you all. This photo from sometime between 1898 and 1905 is in the “animal friendships” section of our Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection, and shows a little cat and his or her canine companion sniffing something out together as a team (likely food). How cute is that? In addition to being adorable, it gives us an excuse to use this line from “Ghostbusters,” one of many films shot at our landmark 42nd Street building (and one that we had a little fun with to fight budget cuts with group Improv Everywhere): “Cats and dogs living together - mass hysteria!” Do you like this crazy Caturday feature? Check out all of our previous entries, too. Hey, it’s raining. You need something to do!

  2. Good thingz come in teeny packagez, big boy.
There’s really no story behind this week’s Caturday. We just thought this cigarette card from between 1932 and 1934 was a cute way to brighten up a gloomy, cloudy day. It’s from our George Arents Collection. Happy Caturday!

  3. Sweetest Thing Ever: Selling Cookies and Lemonade For Libraries

Here is something unspeakably amazing to brighten up your Monday morning - little six-year-old Helen Stone spent her Sunday outside her Morningside Heights apartment selling homemade cookies and lemonade to support The New York Public Library. According to her mom Robin Aronson, Helen (who uses the 115th Street, Morningside Heights and St. Agnes libraries with her family) has long wanted to have a lemonade stand, and decided to give her earnings to NYPL so “the library could buy more books for people.” And she did quite well - Aronson happily reported that “many people were very happy to support the library! Our second sale went to a guy who gave us $10 for a cookie and 2 lemonades!” She also said, “I personally can’t quite get over the magic of the library. You can just take books- for free!” How great is that? NYPL Wire just happened to stroll by the stand yesterday and couldn’t resist taking a few pictures. I mean, it’s just SO cute. And the cookies and lemonade were quite delicious, by the way. Check out more pics below, and if you love NYPL, check out ways you can give to the Library!

  4. Since it’s so darn gloomy outside, we thought we’d share this 1898 image of an owl sitting in the rain. First of all, it has rain, which is appropriate. Second of all, the owl is just cute. The image is in our Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection, which has over 30,000 digitized images from our collections. Enjoy! And stay dry!

  5. Happy nice weather! Happy long weekend! Happy Caturday! This is a photo from our 1939 World’s Fair collection of cute kittens under a magnolia blossom. Random, yes. Adorable, yes. Perfect for Caturday, yes. And, once again, it is from the World’s Fair collection, which we profile in our first iPad app, Biblion. So enjoy the cute cat and download the free app! You can play with it on the beach!

  6. “Dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria!” Yes, love and harmony are in the air for Caturday. In honor of rapidly approaching Valentine’s Day, here’s an image of an adorable kitten who seemingly hearts a cute dog. And the feeling is clearly mutual. Everyone now … “Awwww.” This drawing was originally printed in The Illustrated London News in 1867 and is now in our Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection. And it gave us an excuse to quote the movie “Ghostbusters,” which was filmed at our landmark building! What a great Caturday!

  7. This week’s Caturday is brought to you by Social Media Week, which is coming to NYPL starting Monday. We have the opening reception, plus a bunch of really cool panel discussions - all free. So check out what we’re offering and drop by! Meanwhile, enjoy Dusty the cat (an employee’s beloved pet seen here) engaging in social media by looking at our Twitter page. Do you think she knows that we just reached 100,000 followers and are the number one public library on Twitter? Doubtful - but she’s cute!

  8. With all the recent stories of cats and dogs being rescued from weird places in New York City (the cat was pulled from a wall in Brooklyn, the dog from the Hudson River), we thought we’d dedicate this week’s Caturday to this little munchkin, who was rescued from an electrical control room during the 1939 World’s Fair. The photo is from our World’s Fair collection in our Manuscripts and Archives Division.

  9. Happy first Caturday of 2011!  We hope that your new year is as wonderful as this photo. This week’s Caturday image is from our New York World’s Fair collection circa 1939-1940, one teeny, teeny part of our Manuscripts and Archives Division. Some things — like holding fluffy cats and admiring kittens — never go out of style!
