1. POSTPONED: Tonight’s LIVE from the NYPL event

Tonight’s LIVE from the NYPL event – The One World Schoolhouse: Salman Khan & Carlos Slim in conversation with Joel Klein – is postponed, and will be rescheduled. Tickets to this event will be honored for the new date, and we’ll keep you posted here and at LIVE from the NYPL’s Tumblr as soon as the rescheduled date is finalized.

  2. The New York Public Library is opening 62 branches on Nov. 2 from 11 am. to 5 p.m. That’s seven more branches than we were able to open on Nov. 1. The complete list of open branches can be seen on our website. Stop by, charge up your phone, use the Internet, read a book, talk to your neighbors and enjoy free programming (in fact, many branches are adding programs for children and teens, since they don’t have school). The 55 branches open yesterday were packed full of people - this photo from our Inwood branch, for example, shows a jammed community room, full of kids and parents listening to stories. This is the scene at all of our libraries, so come on down and join us. Please be aware, our servers are down due to power outages, so services will vary location to location (for example, some patrons may not be able to check out new materials). We will continue to combat power outages to get our servers back online and all of our locations open - stay tuned here for the latest.

  3. There are 55 NYPL branches open today (with some limited service due to power outages) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The word is most of them are packed. Many are doing some added programming for kids and teens who are not in school, so drop by or call - the list of open branches with phone numbers is at nypl.org. Unfortunately, power outages are causing prolonged closures of some of our branches, like Jefferson Market, shown here in an interesting photo by Teri Tynes (the creator and writer of Walking Off the Big Apple, a strolling guide to New York). The image shows the Jefferson Market clock tower frozen at the exact moment that power went down. We are working very hard to get all of our branches up and running - stay tuned here and to our website for the latest information. We do expect more branches open tomorrow.

  4. The Latest: NYPL Will Open On Nov. 1

Thanks to the hard work of our Facilities team, The New York Public Library will reopen 55 of its branches from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 1. Unfortunately, ongoing power outages caused by Hurricane Sandy are keeping some branches (particularly those in Staten Island and lower Manhattan) closed - please check nypl.org for details. We are working to open those branches, including our landmark 42nd Street building, as soon as possible.

Please note: all fines on items due between Oct. 29 and Nov. 3 will be waived until Thursday, Nov. 8.

  5. Happy Halloween from NYPL! An artistic staffer carved this amazing Library-Lion-O-Lantern last year using our logo (watch this video of him doing it - it’s pretty cool), and we thought we would share it again. Want to make your own Patience (or Fortitude) pumpkin and show support for the Library? Print out this stencil and get to work! Meanwhile, the Library remains closed this Halloween because of Hurricane Sandy. We are working to reopen tomorrow - in between trick or treating, stay tuned here for updates. And happy Halloween!

  6. NYPL Closed Halloween, Oct. 31

The New York Public Library system will remain closed on Halloween, Oct. 31, because of Hurricane Sandy. We are assessing damage and are working towards a Thursday reopening, but stay tuned for updates. Once again, fines on materials due will be waived, don’t try to return anything. The items will be due the day the libraries reopen. Our free eBooks are also still available for download (if you have power). Hope to see you guys back at our branches soon.

  7. Shout out to WNYC Radio and @WNYCArchives - as part of their Hurricane Sandy coverage, they posted historic photos of famous NYC super storms, including the 1947 blizzard, which dropped 26.4 inches of snow on Central Park. They found this pic of our landmark 42nd Street Library (and poor, stoic Patience and Fortitude) in the aftermath of that storm, and we thought - considering that NYC is shut down and recovering after Frankenstorm - that it was appropriate to share. Remember, NYPL is closed on Oct. 30; stay tuned for the latest on reopenings. Meanwhile, New Yorkers and beyond, if you want to donate to the Red Cross so they can provide shelter, food, emotional support and more to those affected by Sandy, text the word REDCROSS to 90999, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or go to their website.

  8. NYPL Closed Tuesday, Oct. 30

Hurricane Sandy update: NYPL will remain closed on Tuesday, Oct. 30 because of the storm. Once again, fines on materials due on that day will be waived, so stay indoors and don’t try to return anything. The items will be due the day the libraries reopen. Our free eBooks are also still available for download (if you have power), so if you have an NYPL library card, and you want to follow Mayor Bloomberg’s advice and read a good book during the storm, log in and download some entertainment. Stay safe!

  9. bigevidence:

Lines around the block to get into late opening NYPL. People need their books.

Our libraries officially opened for business at noon today following the MTA shutdown and the hurricane - and it seemed people just couldn’t wait! We’re glad to hear it! Just FYI, except for some minor flooding at some of our locations, NYPL escaped Irene basically unscathed. Thanks for all your concern! Also, you should know that any items with due dates set for Saturday and Sunday (when we were closed) have been extended to Tuesday, Aug. 30. So no fines for those days.

  10. Brace yourself and be careful, New York. Irene has arrived (and, boy, is she an unwelcome guest). This undated cigarette card from our George Arents Collection depicts a hurricane warning flag (it’s part of a flags of all nations series, which is sort of weird, because there is no nation of hurricane, that we know of). Anyway, please heed that warning! Stay inside, download an eBook (NYPL branches are closed today, but our website is open for business) and stay safe!
