1. Believe it or not today marks the 25th Anniversary that one of our all-time favorite films was released… Big (1988) starring the one and only Tom Hanks. The film was a BIG success and of course gave Mr. Hanks his first Oscar nomination (he lost to Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man). Big would go on to inspire a 1990’s Broadway Musical whose Playbill we happened to find in our Billy Rose Theatre Division of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. And you can check out a dvd copy of Big at multiple branches of the NYPL. Find out what is so special about Baskin!!!!

  2. Earlier this week kids at the NYPL’s Todt-Hill Westerleigh branch in Staten Island held a rally day to protest the city’s proposed budget cuts for libraries. Some of the libraries young users - such as John and Kayla Marsh - expressed opposition to the cuts by designing paper hands with reasons why they love the library. You can see NY1’s profile on this here.

  3. Look who visited The NYPL this morning! The Cat was a guest along with NASCAR superstar Jeff Gordon as they - excuse me, Mr. Gordon - did a  reading of the Dr. Seuss classic The 500 Hats of  Bartholomew Cubbins which is celebrating its 75th Anniversary. So in honor of The Cat, what is your favorite Dr. Seuss book?

  6. Thank you to the patrons at our 67th Street Library, who worked together to create dolls, stuffed animals, quilts, and hats for disadvantaged children. This afternoon they welcomed the staff of the nationally-recognized charity K.I.D.S.and their partner agency Room To Grow - which works with children in poverty with programs that help little ones in their critical first three years of life. The 26 dolls, 3 quilts and 4 hats are now on their way to new homes! Lots of love to all.

Not even a little rain could keep the tykes away from coming to the library to enjoy a good read. Kids had such a wonderful time creating their masterpieces that I wanted to join in on the fun and make one for myself.
