1. It’s December already (seriously, how did that happen). So for this week’s Caturday, we thought we’d share a holiday-ish item from our collections - the cover of a book from the 1880s called “The Three White Kittens” by the McLoughlin Brothers. So happy Caturday!! Speaking of the holidays, NYPL is holding its annual “Holiday Open House” tomorrow for Friends of the Library complete with music, face painting, refreshments, tours of the stacks (first come, first served), etc. If you’re a Friend, come by the flagship Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on 42nd Street at 1 pm. If you’re not, come by anyway, sign up to become a Friend and party! Hope to see you there!

  2. Since it’s supposed to rain cats and dogs in New York this weekend thanks to Hurricane Irene, we thought we’d use this week’s Caturday to share this image of a man and his cat dealing with bad weather. The caricature was engraved sometime between 1818 and 1830, and is located in our Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs. While this is fun, New Yorkers should take the warnings about this hurricane seriously! Be careful, people! First read this NYPL blog post about hurricane preparedness, then check out some NYPL eBooks from the safety of your home (NYPL is closed today and tomorrow, remember). Then get lost in a book until you turn on the news and hear the storm is over!

  3. WHAT iz you wearing?????
OK, that’s not really what’s happening here. This 1811 illustration by Maria Flaxman is actually a scene from the children’s story “Prince Dorus” by Charles Lamb. It’s a bit of a weird tale, actually, with this cat turning into a man later on. Fascinating. The drawing is currently located in our Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle. Happy Caturday!

  4. “I be jammin!”
Happy Caturday, courtesy of our Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs. This photo, taken sometime between 1860 and 1880 by famous photog Seneca Ray Stoddard, is titled “Canned Meats,” and shows a little kitten in a canning jar. Impressive, little kitty. Most impressive. By the way, this is a stereoscopic image, so it was meant to be viewed in 3-D. And who wouldn’t want to see a kitten squished in a jar in 3-D?

  5. Seven-year-old Robin Tucker declared, “Here’s a new member for your crew” when she presented this cute little kitten to the “good ship Yankee” at the 1939 World’s Fair. The ship was part of the New England exhibit. So that’s back to back Caturdays from our 1939 World’s Fair Collection - stay tuned, because if you love the World’s Fair, we have something exciting for you Tuesday.

  6. Take a peep at this proof of an Easter card by L. Prang & Co, located in our Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs. What does a cat orchestra have to do with Easter? Not completely sure, but it’s still pretty cute. Happy Easter Caturday.

  7. Tomorrow is the first day of spring - new beginnings, new life. So for Caturday, here is an adorable cat with her two adorable kittens. It’s from our 1939 World’s Fair collection in our Manuscripts and Archives Division. Cute, right? Happy Caturday!

  8. It’s a St. Patty’s Day Caturday! Dusty the cat (whose mom is a Tumblr author) gets into the spirit of things and you can, too, at NYPL. We have an exhibit called Ireland America: The Ties That Bind opening Monday at our Library for the Performing Arts. We also have plenty of Ireland-related programming planned for kids and adults this week and beyond at most of our locations, so browse through the Library’s events site and find something fun for you!

  9. Look at the cute happy family! This cigarette card from our George Arents Collection was part of Cavenders’ “Animal Studies” series. Four cuddly cats for the price of one - happy caturday!

  10. “In a short time he had no more trouble with the rats and mice.” Supposedly, this image is from Stokes’ Wonder Book of Fairy Tales, illustrated by Florence Choate & Elizabeth Curtis. Hmmm. Not much of a fairy tale for the mice. But it’s fun for the cat. So, happy Caturday! This image is from our Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection. Enjoy! Unless you’re a mouse.
