1. As evening falls on the city’s first snowfall of 2012, here’s a beautiful 1907 print of a winter evening in NYC by John Edwin Jackson. It’s in our Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection, and we thought it was a nice way to close out our series of snow images today. Enjoy!

  2. How great is this image? This is a print (made into a postcard) by Rachel Robinson Elmer depicting a winter twilight near the famous Washington Square Arch. It’s undated, although it’s likely from the late 1800s or early 1900s. The beautiful image is in our Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection! Happy snow day!

  3. Here is an appropriate image from our collections considering the weather in New York today - an 1893 print by E.G.H. Del’Orme, depicting a “winter morning” on Fifth Avenue and 17th Street in Manhattan. It’s currently in our Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection. Enjoy! And stay warm!

  4. It’s snowing in NYC! In honor of the first snowfall of 2012 (and, as always, Caturday), here is a really beautiful December 1904 print by artist Charles Livingston Bull depicting a snow leopard on a snow-covered mountain. The image is currently in our amazing Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection. Happy Caturday! And happy snow! Stay tuned - we’ll have more snow-related images from our collections throughout the day.

  5. The Library may be closed because of weather, but our lions Patience and Fortitude never get a snow day. They guard our 42 Street building come rain or sleet or snow.

  6. NYC Libraries Closed Today Because Of … Oh, You Know

Old Man Winter sure is relentless this year. Yet another storm has slammed into New York City, blanketing it with snow and ice, and as a result, all New York City libraries are closed today. So stay home. Drink hot chocolate. Check out our Three Faiths and Radioactive online exhibitions. Download an ebook. Enjoy. Just don’t go to the library. And don’t go to the LIVE program tonight. It’s being rescheduled.

  7. We’re not letting this snowstorm stop us. Our branches are open, so have a nice cup of hot cocoa and drop by.
EDIT: We just got word that our Great Kills branch in Staten Island is snowed in. Still 87/88 isn’t too bad.

  8. Snow? What Snow?

NYPL isn’t letting a little (or a lot of) snow shut us down - we’re open today! So escape the cold, white weather, drop by a branch and grab a book to cozy up with later. Meanwhile, the good thing about this weather is it gives us the perfect excuse to share more historic snow shots from our collections, like this pic of snow-covered streets around the Flatiron Building in 1905. It’s from our Mid-Manhattan picture collection. Enjoy, and stay warm!

  9. Digging Out! We’re Open!

NYPL is back open! Armed with shovels and salt, our folks worked all day yesterday (much like the people in this image from our collection showing workers carting off snow in 1867 in NYC) and have dug out our branches. So if you’re getting cabin fever stuck indoors, visit your local branch in The Bronx, Manhattan or Staten Island. Read a book, see your neighbors. There may be delayed openings or some isolated closings, simply because staff can’t get to their locations, so call your local branch before trekking out to make sure the doors are actually unlocked. In the meantime, check out this story from the Staten Island Advance that mentions two of our hardworking, dedicated maintenance men who helped make today’s opening possible.
