1. The weather outside is frightful today, but that didn’t stop these three brave Bronxites from visiting their favorite local library - The Bronx Library Center. We have to admire their gumption and we’re glad that we were able to keep our doors open today and serve our fellow New Yorkers!

  2. During the 36 years that sisters Frances and Terry Ziccardi have been visiting Kingsbridge Library in the Bronx, they have checked out more than 5,000 items.
Along with the new books and ideas that they have discovered at the branch, the sisters have also found a sense of community.
“We love this Library. It’s our second home,” says Frances, who along with her sister comes to the branch at least three or four times a week to find new reading material and see old friends. “Without it we would be lost.”
The duo enjoys discovering contemporary novels and books on art, cooking, crafts, and exercise thanks to the help of Library Manager Martha Gonzalez-Buitrago and other staff members with whom they’ve become friendly.
“The library gives us a sense of community,” says Terry. “It keeps your mind engaged. It’s part of our almost everyday living.”
Free resources for seniors and other essential Library services could be dramatically cut back due to a proposed $43 million reduction in funding for The New York Public Library. Please do your part to protect your branch and the countless patrons who rely on it.

  5. The new Kingsbridge Library is open and being visited by its community. And like all other NYPL locations, you can check in on Foursquare and let your friends and colleagues know that you’re getting in some quality library time! Kingsbridge Library Manager Victor Simmons gets the word out in this video, and yes, the Lego lions were at the Library for yesterday’s opening! Check us out at foursquare.com/nypl.

  6. Today at 10 a.m., NYPL will officially open its beautiful new Kingsbridge Library, which is nearly double the size of its predecessor. It features an outdoor garden, the NYPL’s first green roof, nearly 40 public access computers, wi-fi and over 20,000 collection items. The community has long outgrown the previous building and has been eagerly awaiting their new space, so there is plenty of excitement around this opening. So if you’re free, come on out for the ceremony and a day of programming, including crafts, face-painting, a lecture by a historian, a talk with author Steven Torres and more. Plus, refreshments will be served throughout the day, including pizza and cupcakes donated by local businesses Bari Pizzeria and Restaurant and Leila’s Hand-Dipped Chocolate. So come celebrate! Here’s more information and a schedule - hope to see you!
