1. Today, we honor the work of award-winning actor Jack Klugman, who passed away on Monday. The Emmy Award winner was best known for his work in Gypsy (photo with Ethel Merman courtesy of NYPL’s Digital Gallery/Billy Rose Theater Division), Quincy, M.E., Ben Casey, and The Odd Couple with Tony Randall.
He will be missed.

The banner out front is for Kingdoms of Land, Sea And Sky: 400 Years of Animal Illustration, an exhibition that was at the NYPL in 1991. You can request the catalog, which is at the Schwarzman Building, if you want to learn more. Seinfeld fans will have to tell us from which episode this screen-grab comes — probably an early season?

  8. Karen Russell’s critically acclaimed novel, Swamplandia, is coming to your small screen! The witty, yet haunting tale of Ava Bigtree, which Karen began during her fellowship at the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers, has been approved by HBO. Producer Scott Rudin will lead the half-hour comedy project.
