1. Regular Sunday Hours Feb. 10

Please note that - after slightly changed hours yesterday because of the snow - regular Sunday hours are in effect at all NYPL locations today, Feb. 10.

  2. Although we’ve been a bit distracted with the snow storm (remember, NYPL has slightly changed hours today) the fact is it’s still Caturday, and that needs to be acknowledged! So we are sharing this 1906 image from our Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection of - what else - snow leopards. Happy Caturday!

  3. So, you may have heard that New York City has been hit with some snow. In honor of this event, here are 10 photos from our vast collections showing a blanketed Big Apple. The photos are mostly from 1860 to 1905, although we did sneak in a photo of the 1939 World’s Fair grounds in Queens covered in the white stuff. There are kids throwing snowballs on the Lower East Side, people sleighing through Harlem and Central Park, people shoveling out Madison Square, etc. Check them out - it’s all fascinating. And this is just a small group - see more snow pics in our Digital Gallery

  4. Since snow is on all of our minds right now, we thought we’d share this photo from our Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs of a squirrel hanging out in a snowy Central Park in 1916. It’s not a regular photo, though - it’s a stereograph, or a popular photographic form in the early 1900s that placed two almost identical photographs side-by-side. When placed through a special machine called a stereoscope, the images make a 3-D image (see original of Mr. Squirrel here). NYPL has thousands and thousands of stereographs, and has built an online tool called Stereogranimator that allows you to make your own 3-D images, as well as moving GIFs, like this incredible dancing squirrel we’ve created. The weather’s terrible - stay inside and make your own moving images! And, remember, NYPL has delayed openings today!

  5. Delayed Openings On Saturday, Feb. 9

    image

Because of the snow, all New York Public Library locations will have delayed openings and limited hours today, Feb. 9. Most branches will be open from noon until 5 p.m. There could be slight variations at some locations, however, so check nypl.org before venturing into this weather. And, remember, NYPL eBooks are always available for download from the warmth and comfort of your home! The cold isn’t fun, after all - check out this 1888 image from our Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection depicting a New York City police officer rubbing snow on people’s frozen ears. Crazy. Want to look at other historic snow photos? We’ve got plenty on our Digital Gallery.

Update:  Both our Macomb’s Bridge Library and our Eastchester Library will be closed today.

  6. All NYPL Locations Closing at 5 pm

imageBecause of the rapidly approaching snowstorm, all NYPL locations will close at 5 p.m. today, including Mid-Manhattan LibraryBronx Library Center, The Science, Industry and Business Library, The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, the Library for the Performing Arts, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Stay safe, and stay tuned here and to other NYPL channels tonight and tomorrow morning for updates on possible hour changes or closings due to inclement weather. Remember, if the weather’s terrible (as it was in this print from our Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection depicting Fifth Avenue and 17th Street in 1893), you can stay inside and download an NYPL eBook from the comfort of your home!

  7. The New York Public Library is opening 65 branches today, Nov. 3, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (full list on our website). Come on down, charge your phones, use our Internet, read a book, chat with your neighbors and enjoy free programming (like these kids did at our Inwood branch the other day when they were home from school). We have been packed the last few days and are proud to serve NYC after Hurricane Sandy. With power starting to be restored across the city, we anticipate even more branches to open Monday (we’re closed Sunday). Stay tuned for the latest. Hope to see you soon.

  8. The New York Public Library is opening 62 branches on Nov. 2 from 11 am. to 5 p.m. That’s seven more branches than we were able to open on Nov. 1. The complete list of open branches can be seen on our website. Stop by, charge up your phone, use the Internet, read a book, talk to your neighbors and enjoy free programming (in fact, many branches are adding programs for children and teens, since they don’t have school). The 55 branches open yesterday were packed full of people - this photo from our Inwood branch, for example, shows a jammed community room, full of kids and parents listening to stories. This is the scene at all of our libraries, so come on down and join us. Please be aware, our servers are down due to power outages, so services will vary location to location (for example, some patrons may not be able to check out new materials). We will continue to combat power outages to get our servers back online and all of our locations open - stay tuned here for the latest.

  9. Happy Halloween from NYPL! An artistic staffer carved this amazing Library-Lion-O-Lantern last year using our logo (watch this video of him doing it - it’s pretty cool), and we thought we would share it again. Want to make your own Patience (or Fortitude) pumpkin and show support for the Library? Print out this stencil and get to work! Meanwhile, the Library remains closed this Halloween because of Hurricane Sandy. We are working to reopen tomorrow - in between trick or treating, stay tuned here for updates. And happy Halloween!

  10. NYPL Closed Tuesday, Oct. 30

Hurricane Sandy update: NYPL will remain closed on Tuesday, Oct. 30 because of the storm. Once again, fines on materials due on that day will be waived, so stay indoors and don’t try to return anything. The items will be due the day the libraries reopen. Our free eBooks are also still available for download (if you have power), so if you have an NYPL library card, and you want to follow Mayor Bloomberg’s advice and read a good book during the storm, log in and download some entertainment. Stay safe!
